Black Earth Rising: Miniseries Reviews

February 7, 2019
With a fine cast led by John Goodman...and a series of cracking stories stretching from London and Paris to Rwanda and the Congo and back, it's immediately grabby.

As all good drama should, Black Earth Rising asks big, thorny questions, stoking debate rather than closing it down, not least when it comes to conversations over history and to whom it belongs.

Black Earth Rising is actually about seeking the light. As Kate learns the buried truth about the past...she begins to escape its clutches, transforming herself from an innocent victimized by history into a wised-up woman who's trying to make it.

Has its share of powers to recommend it -- among them, the riveting history that is its subject; its visual richness; and, not least, the complex questions of guilt and responsibility it poses about a catastrophe like the one that took place in Rwanda.

It's a no-win game, with very human consequences. This drama certainly illustrates those points, but largely without the human side needed to make the abstract real.

[It] squanders the audience's goodwill with ill-conceived narrative turns, a reliance on cliché, and, worst, dialogue that defies belief.
