Black Earth Rising's compelling core narrative can become overwhelmed by tangential storylines.

While Blick admirably wants to inform and interrogate a topic most of the world would like to ignore, Black Earth Rising is overly confident in all the wrong places and lacks trust in all the right ones.

Black Earth Rising is grounded in one of the most viscerally horrifying events in human history. Yet with every misstep and unnecessary contortion, the show dulls the edge of its remarkably potent source material.

Despite a talented cast and its creator's ambitions, Black Earth Rising has limited insight into the lives of survivors.

[It] squanders the audience's goodwill with ill-conceived narrative turns, a reliance on cliché, and, worst, dialogue that defies belief.

It's a no-win game, with very human consequences. This drama certainly illustrates those points, but largely without the human side needed to make the abstract real.

Good storytelling captures the wider world, and this series not only delivers suspense, but much to actually think about afterwards.

If you're looking for a multi-layered political drama and are ready for a good cry, then Black Earth Rising may be for you. But be warned, some of the material may be trigger inducing.

This is a tense, state-of-the-world thriller with a knockout cast and a meaty, relevant plot.

As good as the actors are here, they deserved a less melodramatic and cliche script than they got. Luckily, star Michaela Cole has a nice chemistry with John Goodman and the pair save this from being just another offering on Netflix.

Coel, who was required to go from 0-90 emotionally at several points, had the hardest hill to climb. What a talent she is.

[Blick] unabashedly take[s] as his canvas a tiny, vastly privileged subsection of the British elite...but use[s] it to tell a tale that sprawls out and down into the bloody dirt.

It had a lot of expositional work to do, although the complexities were woven skillfully and the dialogue was emotionally intelligent.

The omens are good here in a storyline that switches back and forth from London to Africa and that raises awkward questions about colonial guilt and redress as well as providing intriguing characters.

With a fine cast led by John Goodman...and a series of cracking stories stretching from London and Paris to Rwanda and the Congo and back, it's immediately grabby.
January 25, 2019
What's most striking about Black Earth Rising -- outside of the constant touching, the terrific performances, and the thoughtful filmmaking, anyway -- is that it's essentially a legal thriller mixed with a painful search for personal history.

Michaela Coel and John Goodman are riveting in this tale of a woman searching for answers about how she survived the Rwandan genocide.

It isn't a chore - it's an international thriller with spies and guns and, yes, some running about too.

Scenes set in a sweaty, dusty, dangerous Congo contrast starkly with the antiseptically pristine environment of the ICC.

Black Earth Rising is a remarkable look at conflict of all kinds, prepared to suggest that people can do the right things for the wrong reasons, or do good and bad at different times. Grey areas, in high definition.
